Tonga is a kingdom in the full sense: a Polynesian monarchy that was never colonized, and proud of it. We came for the late-season humpback window. The swim, the Sundays, and Neiafu live on the Vavaʻu page.
The kingdom is three groups. Vavaʻu, in the north, is the cruising heart: steep green islands and a deep harbor at Neiafu. Haʻapai is the quiet middle, low and remote, where we have been spending time before we check out for Fiji in late October. Tongatapu is the south. Nukuʻalofa, the capital, is the place for government offices, the big market, and provisioning. We have not written a separate page for Tongatapu.
Sunday is kept strictly. Shops close, boats stay quiet, and church bells and hymns carry across the water. What that felt like, and what surprised us, is on Vavaʻu.
