Tonga customs and clearance for yachts, step by step

Tonga customs for a yacht: advance notice, no Sunday clearance, and a check-in at each island group. We cleared in at Neiafu, in Vava’u, in September 2026. Official rules last checked 3 October 2026.

By Steve and Meghan, SV Some Tuesday. Where are we now?

We cleared in at Neiafu. We haven’t cleared in at Nuku’alofa, Pangai, Niuatoputapu or Niuafo’ou. The steps below still cover those ports. We left Niue on 5 September 2026 and used an ETA of 8 September 2026, 12:00, for Neiafu. Coming from Niue you cross the date line, so put the ETA in Tonga’s date and time.

Heads up

This is best efforts, not a guarantee. Rules change, officials change, and two boats clearing into the same harbor the same week can have pretty different experiences. We do our best by combining three things: research (reading the official sites so you don’t have to), automation (a tool that fills in the forms for you), and personal experience (what actually happened to us, with dates). It’s all in one guide and one forms tool. It won’t make clearing in effortless, but it should make it a whole lot easier. If something’s different when you get there, tell us and we’ll fix it for the next boat.

What happened to us
This is the notice we sent for Neiafu. We haven’t used it for the other ports of entry.

2. Call before you arrive

What
Call Tonga Maritime Radio on VHF 16 before you arrive.
Official

3. Check in at Neiafu, Vava’u, or another port of entry, Q flag up, not on a Sunday

Ports
Neiafu, Nuku’alofa, Pangai, Niuatoputapu and Niuafo’ou. We cleared at Neiafu only.
What happened to us
Neiafu, September 2026. Health was TOP 100 and Agriculture was TOP 22. That was the whole fee list. For the dogs, they only asked us to confirm they would not go ashore.

4. Clear Customs, Health, Agriculture and Immigration

Have ready
Passports, boat papers, and the advance notice. If you are carrying more than TOP$10,000 in cash, or the foreign equivalent, hand a border currency report to an officer. Don’t email it. If you need an officer outside normal hours, that’s Form C31. Saturday is overtime.

5. Check in and out of each island group

What
Tonga wants a check-in as you move between groups. Customs hands out the local movement report. It isn’t on the official forms page, so the tool doesn’t invent one.
What happened to us
Our clearance was Neiafu. We haven’t cleared in at the other groups. Time spent cruising is not the same thing as a clearance.

6. Clear out on C15

What
Form C15 is the outward clearance, and it’s what gets you duty-free fuel. Clear on a weekday if you can. Form C21 is the extension if a temporary import needs to run past the first four months. The total still can’t pass 12 months. You write the reason and the dates yourself.

What happened to us
We haven’t written up a Tonga clear-out yet.

The honest fine print

Some Tuesday, LLC sells information and a do-it-yourself forms tool. We never file, submit, sign or send paperwork for anyone. We’re not a customs agent, yacht agent or lawyer, and nothing here is legal advice.

Everything here is best efforts. We combine research from the official sources, automation that fills in the forms for you, and our own experience. Rules change, officials change, and every boat’s experience in each country will be a little different, including from ours. Before you rely on anything here, check it against the official links and with the officials themselves. You’re responsible for checking, signing and submitting your own forms.

Fees, produce or meat taken by biosecurity, pet rules, office hours, or anything we got wrong. A short note is enough.

We read these before anything is published. Don’t send passport numbers, crew lists, or other personal documents. This form doesn’t ask for them. How cruiser reports are handled
