La Paz and the Sea of Cortez

In La Paz we did laundry, a Segway loop, the Christmas parade, and dinner at Azotea. Agua Verde was our favorite anchorage, with tacos on the beach.

La Paz and the islands

From Some Tuesday Marina La Paz was fantastic, and very helpful in every way. We loved our stay. We stayed there twice, entering and exiting the Sea of Cortez, where we spent two weeks. Agua Verde was one of the anchorages, and our favorite. It is so beautiful, with tacos on the beach. Read the full story in the Captain’s Log: arriving in La Paz, the second stay, and Agua Verde. Caleta El Candelero From Some Tuesday

Caleta El Candelero is on Isla Espíritu Santo, just north of La Paz. It is a remote cove, with a rock in the middle that looks like a candle flame. This is where I made the anchoring mistake. The water was so still that I didn’t back down, and the anchor never set. It dragged 130 feet overnight, across the sand, toward the rocks. Always back down on your anchor. Read the full story in the Captain’s Log. The cove is in the La Paz video.

Marina de la Paz checked us in with the Port Captain. On the way back after New Year the marina was shut for the day, so we provisioned and I changed the oil in both engines and both saildrives. San Evaristo’s north cove held, but the wind came over the bluffs and the boat swung hard. Agua Verde’s inner bay, behind the rock wall, was calm in 43 feet. The dinghy is too heavy to beach, so I anchored it and waded. The Hook, on Isla San Francisco, was crowded and fine.
