A SIM and internet in French Polynesia
Vini and Starlink in French Polynesia.
Most of this circulates by word of mouth among cruisers. We pulled it together, organized it, and share it free. It is not official guidance, so don’t rely on it as such.
Staying connected on a visit Heard from Cruisers
This page is a phone and Starlink. It is not things to see. The islands are on the French Polynesia page.
Cruisers report a Vini prepaid eSIM online at vini.pf, with no store visit, and prepaid SIMs at OPT offices. They also say there is no official Starlink service in French Polynesia, and that coverage follows the territorial-waters line. The detail is below. It is word of mouth, not a plan from Vini or Starlink.
Vini
Prepaid eSIM Heard from Cruisers
A Vini prepaid eSIM is available online at vini.pf, with no store visit. Account creation often errors, and many people just buy a new eSIM each month. Vini support helps in English. Prepaid SIMs are also at OPT offices.
Postpaid, and a small eSIM Heard from Cruisers
A Vini postpaid plan (Reva) needs proof of address. A marina invoice or a letter from the mairie is accepted. A Vini eSIM with a number is 1,000 XPF for 5 GB.
Roaming outage Heard from Cruisers
A Vini roaming outage of a few days hit T-Mobile and StaffTraveler eSIM users.
Starlink
No local plan Heard from Cruisers
Starlink coverage follows the territorial-waters line, about 12 nautical miles, and Ocean mode is what works beyond it. There is no official Starlink service in French Polynesia, and you cannot set French Polynesia as the home country. Workarounds include setting another country, such as Fiji or a France region, and then living with the away-from-home rules. A write-up of the roaming change: the roaming change. Roam limits Heard from Cruisers
Starlink Roam Unlimited limits take effect 17 August 2026, a 30–60 day rule. Global Priority is the long-term option, about USD 150 a month plus data.
