Day 143 - 146: Days 24 - 27 of Pacific Passage

This entry was first published on Substack. Read on Substack

I fell behind on my Captain’s Log at this point - probably out of sheer exhaustion!!

I’ll include below the communications with Ocean Tactics for the record, but I’m not going to try to re-create my thoughts from those days. They are lost to history!

However, I definitely WILL re-create all our thoughts and celebration from Arrival Day, which was Day 28, or April 29, 2026. Keep an eye out for that post!

Weather Routing Comms for these days are below:

Sea state: better now, but the roughest of the passage last night. 9-12 feet with some monster 15s hitting here and there. Still coming from SE, but steep and frequent, maybe 8 seconds? It was a long night of yawing and surfing. As of now (12:50 PDT) seas have calmed but we still have 6-8 feet.

We also had to do our best to dodge multiple rain storms, one of which had 40 kt gusts, and sustained 36. Reefed way down and ran NNW to try to get out of it and put the seas behind us, as it was tracking SW. All weather was coming at us from NE tracking to SW. It was an awful night. No sleep. Even so, we’re 220 nm from land and in good spirits!! Can’t wait for a margarita!!

By the way, forecast of moderating to 15-18 by late yesterday lied to you :-). We had the same phenomena and sustained 24-28 knots all night!!

Sea state: we’re in a roller coaster again - 8-12 feet, steeper, pushing us around from the stern very aggressively - the good news is, we’re used to it now!!

SOG 7.5
COG 260

The crazy seas and weather came back! We had 33 kt gusts overnight, around 2am, winds started building around 11pm and we had 24-25 sustained for much of the night. It was so rough I couldn’t sleep, and that never happens to me!! We’re ready to get there!!

OT:
There is unfortunately nowhere I can put you except to say the forecast has the wind moderating 15-18 by late today.
I’m still working on what’s causing the diurnal effect with the wind increasing overnight.

Sea state: pretty comfy - 6-8 ft waves with longer period - maybe 9 or 10

Very comfortable now. Clear skies with some clouds. Nice consistent breeze giving us good speed without the mixing bowl!! Some Tuesday is very happy today!!

OT:
Excellent news! Some showers possible today but generally conditions remain consistent.
A system to the south likely to bring a larger wave set on Tuesday for a short time along with an increase in cloud cover but nothing nasty in the medium to long range.
